Utah Prosecutors Charge Accused in Charlie Kirk Fatal Shooting with Aggravated Murder
Utah legal authorities on this week formally charged Tyler Robinson, the young adult alleged of killing conservative figure Charlie Kirk, with aggravated murder—and stated they will pursue the capital punishment should he is found guilty.
Charges and Aggravating Factors
The exact accusations filed include premeditated killing, illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice. County Attorney Jeff Gray explained that aggravating circumstances included the victim’s public statements and the attendance of minors during the shooting.
“I do not choice made lightly,” the prosecutor said. “This determination I have made based solely on the available evidence.”
Investigation Details and Alleged Intent
Authorities allege that Robinson instructed his roommate to delete damaging digital communications and remain silent to authorities. Based on information, Robinson’s parent informed investigators that her son had become more political and had started leaning toward progressive views, including support for LGBTQ+ rights.
The suspect was reportedly dating his roommate, who was undergoing a gender transition.
Incident of the Shooting
Kirk was fatally wounded during an appearance at Utah Valley University shortly after a comment about trans people and mass shootings. Video of the incident showed the shooting.
Apprehension and Evidence
Robinson was taken into custody the following day after people close to him identified him from suspect photos. He turned himself in with the help of a family friend who was a law enforcement official.
Prior to his arrest, Robinson apparently confessed to the shooting in a message on Discord, stating: “Everyone, I have bad news, I was responsible on campus yesterday.”
Investigators also revealed that DNA matching Robinson was found on a cloth placed on the firearm believed to have been used in the attack. The weapon was discarded near the university.
Text Messages and Engraved Bullets
Additional proof featured a digital communication from Robinson to his housemate that read: “I had the chance to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to do it.”
Authorities also discovered cartridges with engraved inscriptions including internet memes, gaming references, and lyrics from an anti-fascist anthem. One inscription read: “NoTices Bulge OWO What’s This?”
Court Process and Custody
The defendant will remain in custody without bail due to the state’s intent to seek the capital sentence. He was set to be presented in court for an initial appearance.
The prosecutor referred to the homicide as “a national loss,” adding that Kirk was murdered while engaging in First Amendment rights.
