Oxford Union President-Elect Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Disputed Comments
The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also said to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.
Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter accused the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in spring.
