José Mourinho Shows Interest in Benfica Head Coach Position

Jose Mourinho has expressed keen in taking over as the next manager of SL Benfica, following the exit of Bruno Lage.

Background of the Situation

Lage was relieved of his duties after the Portuguese club suffered a surprising 3-2 defeat to Qarabağ in the UEFA Champions League.

Team chairman Rui Costa mentioned that the organization intends to name a new manager by Saturday, though he declined to comment on individual names.

Reports suggest that the Portuguese manager is willing to a comeback to Portuguese football, more than two decades after he left for Chelsea FC.

Mourinho's Past with the Eagles

José Mourinho started his coaching career with SL Benfica in 2000, though his tenure was brief, lasting only ten games.

He later gained fame with Porto, leading them to multiple titles, such as the Champions League in 2004.

From that point, he has coached elite clubs across the continent, such as Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real, Manchester United, Spurs, Roma, and Fenerbahçe.

Possible Challenges and Fixtures

If appointed, Mourinho would confront his former club Chelsea in the UCL on September 30.

The team is also set to meet Newcastle and Real Madrid in the league phase.

Currently, the club ranks sixth in the Liga Portugal, 5 points behind table-toppers Porto.

Election Background

This decision to replace Lage aligns with upcoming presidential votes on 25 October.

Joao Noronha Lopes, the frontrunner, has allegedly shown interest in Rúben Amorim of Man United.

The president emphasized that the choice was taken exclusively for sporting reasons and not for election benefits.

"I am not here to save any roles," he stated. "The goal is to ensure the best future for the club."
