Investigating the Link Between Internet Jokes, Video Games and Internet Subculture in the Charlie Kirk Assassination

Greetings to our analysis of the ways in which internet culture, viral jokes and video game culture connected in the shocking attack of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

The Projectile Message and Its Online Roots

The round found at the location featured a message that stated: “Notices protrusion OwO what’s this?” This expression is commonly recognized within online culture as a mocking nod to anthropomorphic enthusiasts, a subculture that engages in cosplay as creature figures.

“This phrase was spread both as a way of making fun of furries as well as related communities, and has also been adopted by members as a means of owning the meme,” notes a popular online culture resource. “In the end, it is portrayed in online humor as one of the most cringeworthy remarks a person could possibly say to someone else.”

Additional Evidence Pointing to Online Culture

Law enforcement found additional bullet casings with etched inscriptions that seemed to reference gaming communities and insider jokes. A said: “O Bella Ciao, Bella Ciao”, an Italian anti-fascist song that has found traction in gaming circles. A second inscription declared: “If you read this, you must be homosexual, LOL.” That line is often described as standard “provocative rhetoric” within internet discourse.

One final shell featured the phrase: “Hey fascist! Take this!” accompanied by an arrow sequence which appears to reference commands from the video game Helldivers 2, particularly those employed to drop a large bomb in the game.

The Alleged Perpetrator and Target

The alleged assailant, a 22-year-old from Utah, is accused of firing a one bullet from a high-powered rifle at Charlie Kirk during a campus event in Orem. The victim, age 31, was the well-known personality within right-wing groups and led the youth group a political advocacy organization. His rise to fame was largely supported by his active online engagement.

A key figure in right-wing politics, he galvanized college-aged conservatives who operated in a separate environment from mainstream outlets. His ten-year period between his start as a youth advocate and the incident saw the growth of Make America Great Again movements together with a shift in the media landscape, with Kirk playing a pivotal part in each.

Facebook Insiders Keep to Step Public

During related news, Meta faced new insider claims last week. A set of six ex and current staff claim the company covered up damage to minors on its virtual reality devices. A second whistleblower, Attaullah Baig, alleges that significant security and privacy flaws were ignored within the communication application.

As response, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company has approved more than 180 research projects related to virtual reality safety since 2022, featuring work on youth security. The representative added that features have been added to limit unwanted interaction and offer parental supervision options.

This is far from the only instance Meta has been subject to internal disclosures. Previous employees have spoken out regarding concerns varying from election interference to damage to adolescent mental health.

US politicians are approaching the claims seriously. Politicians from both sides have shown backing for regulating social media firms and other technology companies.

“The particulars in these reports are difficult to stomach – because they reveal such major risks to children’s safety,” stated one senator. “Once more, the company is revealed to be knowingly downplaying problems on its platforms. See no evil, speak no evil, see no evil’ is simply not an acceptable business philosophy.”

A official noted that he and others were looking to move forward with “long overdue change” in response to the continuing revelations.
