{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation happened on the third rotation when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just sprint across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is actively examining the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to enter the track and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired following that moment"
