FBI Director Wears LFC Necktie at Senate Hearing

FBI Director Kash Patel appeared in front of the Senate judicial panel on Tuesday sporting a tie displaying the logo of EPL team Liverpool.

Online Reactions

The choice of neckwear sparked questions on social media. For one thing, it is highly unusual for a public figure to wear a tie featuring the logo of a business or sports team. For another, Patel has never openly declared fandom for Liverpool previously—that is not in words.

That said, he has been photographed wearing Liverpool ties on at least two separate instances. The first was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting congressional members on Capitol Hill following Donald Trump’s electoral win. At the time, he was rumored to be joining the administration. The second occurred roughly five months later, on 9 April 2025, at a press event announcing the capture of drug traffickers by US authorities.

A Collection

Notably, the necktie worn on Tuesday was different from the previous item. The earlier design had thick stripes and a subtle logo, while the newer tie featured narrower bands and a more prominent logo—identified as the “heritage tie”.

The fact that he owns several Liverpool ties implies that his choice is not a fluke.

Heated Proceedings

At Tuesday’s hearing, the atmosphere turned heated on several occasions. Patel engaged in a loud argument with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He defended his leadership of the FBI, his firing of veteran employees involved in investigations concerning the January 6 events, and a social media post in which he declared that a person of interest was in detention for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.

“I don’t see it as a mistake,” Patel stated to the committee. “I see it as working with the public to identify that there was a subject in detention.”

Political Contrast

If Patel does follow Liverpool, it would symbolize a sharp clash of ideological allegiances. As one of the nation's top law enforcement officials, Patel has been a public face of a Trump’s renewed presidency that has employed heavy-handed tactics to impact multiple areas of society.

This includes raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in public places that have led to the detention of many of foreign nationals regardless of their residency or nationality. It also includes the dispatching of government officers to left-leaning US cities in response to alleged higher crime rates—claims that have been disproven.

Liverpool’s Identity

The team, on the other hand, is recognized to be one of the more left-leaning clubs in the continent, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.

Famous Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once stated: “I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone working for each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a portion of the benefits at the end of the day.”

Although the operations of Liverpool have evolved in recent times, traces of socialist ideology remain. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who led the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, described his personal politics by saying: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”

Historical Tensions

The club’s supporters also have a considerable history of distrust toward law enforcement. A lot of this originates in the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. Initially, police blamed the crowd of hooliganism and intoxication. Subsequently, separate investigations revealed that the crowd crush was due to serious failures by authorities, who had deceived the people to transfer responsibility.

Patel’s Background

Patel rose to prominence after the events of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal defense fund for those arrested in relation to the Capitol breach. A career prosecutor and legal aide to right-wing politicians, Patel leveraged his ties with the first Trump administration to develop commercial projects and a media career. In both roles, he advanced multiple conspiracy theories, including debunked assertions of election fraud and false statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
